Yucca gloriosa is a tough, evergreen plant bearing crowns of fleshy, spiky, architectural foliage. Eventually it forms a branched trunk. In late summer, clusters of cream-white bell-shaped flowers appear, which are loved by bees. In milder regions the flowers develop into fruits, which attract birds, particularly starlings. It’s a useful plant for growing in dry, sunny gardens, coastal locations and exotic planting schemes. Younger plants can be grown successfully in a container.
The leaves of Yucca gloriosa 'Variegata' have pretty yellow and pink variegation. Grow in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny part of the garden. It requires very little care.
