Broad beans, Vicia faba, are easy to grow, bearing an early crop of delicious, tender beans suitable for using in the first of the summer salads.
Vicia faba 'De Monica', is one of the earliest maturing broad bean varieties from a spring sowing. It has a strong root system and an upright growth habit, growing two-three stems per plant. Vicia faba 'De Monica' bears large yields of pods containing up to five large seeds, which are ready to harvest at the same time as winter sown variety 'Aquadulce Claudia'.
Vicia faba 'De Monica' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Pinch out growing tips in spring to deter blackfly, and support plants in exposed gardens.
