Tagetes patula, or French marigolds, are hardy, easy-to-grow annuals native to Mexico. They're grown mainly as a bedding plant at the edge of herbaceous borders but are often grown alongside tomatoes as a companion plant, to ward off white fly.
Tagetes 'Dainty Marietta' is a dwarf variety with pinnate green foliage and single, rich golden flowers with maroon blotches, and blooms over a long period. For best results grow in free-draining soil in full sun and feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering.
