Grown as a flamboyant bedding plant or conservatory houseplant, solenostemon (syn coleus) comes in a multitude of forms and colours, with dramatic foliage ranging from bright reds, yellows, greens, bronzes, pinks and browns. An ornamental member of the mint family, it's native to Indonesia and is therefore tender. Although many species are technically perennials, they're typically grown as annuals in the UK.
Solenostemon 'Chocolate Mint' has semi-succulent stems bearing ovate, velvety, maroon leaves with prominent, rounded teeth and bright green margins. Insignificant whorled racemes of tubular, pale blue flowers can appear at any time of year.
Grow Solenostemon 'Chocolate Mint' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun, ideally in a sheltered spot. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. If growing in pots, move indoors in autumn to overwinter. Alternatively, grow as a conservatory houseplant.
