Perennial salvias are worth their weight in gold in ornamental borders, thanks to their summer-long displays of spiky, nectar-rich flowers. Salvia 'Silas Dyson' has gorgeous, port-coloured buds which open to reveal vivid, pink-tinged crimson flowers. It's very tolerant of drought, and is hardy if given full sun and good drainage. 'Silas Dyson' is extremely popular with bees and makes a beautiful cut flower.
For best results grow Salvia 'Silas Dyson' in a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage flowers into mid-autumn. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or garden compost. Perennial salvias may need protection in the harshest winters.
