Rodgersia pinnata bears clusters of bright-pink, star-shaped flowers on dark-red stems from mid- to late summer. The leaves emerge purplish-bronze in spring, maturing to green in summer. Rodgersia pinnata 'Chocolate Wing' has chocolate-tinged, bronze-green foliage, which contrasts with the small pink flowers.
For the best coloured leaves grow Rodgersia pinnata 'Chocolate Wing' in a sheltered, sunny spot in moist soil, such as in the margins of a pond or stream. It works well when grown alongside shuttlecock ferns. Lift and divide congested clumps in spring.
