Gooseberries are the first soft fruits harvested in many gardens, especially if the immature green berries are thinned in May for cooking. Like redcurrants, gooseberries develop a permanent system of fruiting sideshoots, and may be trained as fans, espaliers, cordons and standards, as well as bushes.
Ribes uva-crispa var. reclinatum 'Whinham's Industry' is a popular red-fruited gooseberry, which is more tolerant of partial shade than other gooseberry varieties. It's an excellent choice for heavy soils but can be prone to mildew. The Royal Horticultural Society has given Ribes uva-crispa var. reclinatum 'Whinham's Industry' the prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
