An inexpensive, fast-growing and undemanding shrub, Ribes sangiuneum 'Brocklebankii' provides plenty of colour, both in spring when the pink flower trusses appear, and for the rest of the summer when its yellow foliage glows cheerfully in shaded borders. Ribes sangiuneum 'Brocklebankii' resembles the fruiting blackcurrant, sharing the same pungent fragrance. However it's slower-growing and smaller than the basic species.
Grow in moist soil in full sun. Its roots are shallow, and a spring mulch on light soils will prevent die-back or wilting foliage. Ruthless pruning keeps plants bushy and rejuvenated.
