With species native to North America through to Asia, plants in the podophyllum genus vary in colour and form, but they are renowned for their dramatic, leathery foliage and foul-smelling flowers, which are pollinated by flies. Most species grow best in moist shade, where their dramatic foliage can be enjoyed along with other foliage plants including hostas, heucheras and tiarellas.
Podophyllum peltatum bears glossy leaves and single white to pale pink, gently scented flowers, followed by edible fruit.
For best results, grow plants in rich, moist soil, in partial to full shade. Any part of the plant can be harmful if eaten.
