There are more than 400 types of holly from around the world, from small shrubs to large climbers. Species range from those bearing leaves without any spines, to leaves that are spine-toothed or completely spiny.

Japananese holly, Ilex 'Hollywood' is a rounded shrub bearing small, glossy, spiny and ovate leaves, which stay bright green all year round. In autumn small red berries are formed on the branches. A compact shrub, it's particularly suited to small gardens, and makes an excellent bonsai plant.

Grow Ilex dimorphophylla 'Hollywood' in a sheltered spot in full sun, in well-drained soil.
