Chinese witch hazels are reliable and colourful winter flowering shrubs, thriving in sun or shade but preferring shelter from strong winds during the flowering season. The spidery, fragrant and conspicuous blooms grow on bare branches, making Chinese witch hazels perfect for adding winter interest to the garden.

Hamamelis x intermedia is a cross between Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis) and Japanese witch hazel (Hamamelis japonica). Hamamelis x intermedia 'Aphrodite' has slightly crimped, orange-red, sweetly-scented flowers. The dark green leaves fade to an intense red before falling in autumn.

For best results, grow Hamamelis x intermedia 'Aphrodite' in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun to part shade.
