Tree peonies - actually shrubs - have flamboyant, papery blooms and interesting foliage. Although very elegant in appearance, they're actually rather robust if planted in the right spot, where they can last for many years.
There are many tree peony cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
Paeonia 'Shimanishiki' has eye-catching red and white striped flowers on plants with a neat 'shrub' habit. For best results, grow 'Shimanishiki' in rich, well-prepared soil in full sun. Protect tree peonies from wind and prune in late winter, when plants are still dormant.
