Intersectional peonies are a cross between woody-stemmed tree peonies and herbaceous peonies, which die back in autumn.
There are many cultivars to choose from, with single and double flowers, in a range of colours. They thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
Paeonia 'Bartzella' has large, frilled, yellow flowers with a flash of pink around a ring of bright yellow stamens, and a delicate, citrus fragrance. It can occasionally produce a second flush of flowers in September.
