Mimetes cuccullatus, commonly known as red pagoda or rooistompie, is a compact, evergreen shrub native to the cool, moist, ocean-facing slopes of South Africa. While the white flowers are mostly inconspicuous, the bright red new growth can't be missed.
In areas that are likely to experience hard frosts, grow it in a large pot or container that can be brought undercover to a frost-free location over winter.
For best results, grow Mimetes cuccullatus in full sun in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. In containers, use ericaceous compost and keep well-watered. Mimetes cuccullatus is tolerant of wind and salt spray, so it's a great plant for coastal locations. Should you want to cut it back, it responds very well to hard pruning. Avoid any heavy feeding, instead go for a slow-release fertiliser or garden compost.
