Sweet peas can be trained to grow up canes for high-quality blooms, or allowed to scramble up a trellis or obelisk. They make excellent cut flowers. Plants need a cool moist root run, and regular watering in dry weather.
Lathyrus odoratus ‘Susy Z’ is a ‘flake’ sweet pea, meaning it has flowers with a light background and a darker colour striped, or ‘flaked’ over it. Flowers of ‘Susy Z’ are dark red and cream. It makes an ideal garden flower and is perfect for using in floral arangements and as a cut flower at home, but isn’t suitable for exhibiting as the flaking of the flowers is too variable.
For best results, feed Lathyrus odoratus ‘Susy Z’ fortnightly with a high-potash fertiliser, and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
