Sweet peas can be trained to grow up canes for high-quality blooms, or allowed to scramble up a trellis or obelisk. They make excellent cut flowers. Plants need a cool moist root run, and regular watering in dry weather.
Lathyrus odoratus 'Beaujolais' is a lovely Spencer variety, bearing masses of highly scented burgundy flowers throughout summer. Looking almost black, the blooms make a striking addition to the garden and in floral arrangements.
For best results, feed Lathyrus odoratus ‘Beaujolais' fortnightly with a high-potash fertiliser, and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
