Violet slipper flower, Jovellana violacea, is an attractive sub shrub native to Chile and New Zealand, bearing pretty, lobed, fresh green leaves on dark red stems. In summer, these are complemented by pale pink-purple, bell-shaped flowers, the inside of which are adorned with a splash of yellow, and maroon spots.

Grow Jovellana violacea in a sheltered spot in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. While tolerant of cold temperatures, it’s not fully hardy, and may need protection from freezing conditions. The Royal Horticultural Society have awarded it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
