Ice plant, Hylotelephium spectabile, is an old-fashioned perennial, bearing cabbage-like rosettes of succulent foliage. Formerly called Sedum spectabile, it makes a striking feature in autumn when masses of flat, bright pink flowerheads appear on upright stems. Its flowers are extremely attractive to late-flying butterflies and bees.
Hylotelephium spectabile 'Carl' bears blue-green rosettes of succulent foliage, above which tightly packed heads of green buds form, opening to reveal masses of tiny bright pink flowers. For best results grow Hylotelephium spectabile 'Carl' in full sun in well-drained soil. Divide clumps every few years to improve flowering.
