Hakonechloa is a genus of beautiful, low-growing ornamental grasses. Forming gently arching mounds, hakonechloas are perfect for softening the edges of a path or growing in a pot. They look fantastic when planted alongside more formal plants, such as box, Buxus sempervirens. Its architectural blooms can be dried and used in flower arranging.
Hakonechloa macra ‘Nicolas’ is an unusual variety, bearing broad, fresh green foliage, which takes on beautiful orange and red colours in autumn, before dying back.
For best results, grow Hakonechloa macra ‘Nicolas’ in moist, humus-rich soil in full sun to partial shade. Cut foliage down before new growth starts in spring and mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost.
