Dusky cranesbill, Geranium phaeum, is a fantastic cranesbill geranium, useful for growing in shade. It forms a dense, weed-suppressing matt of green, deeply lobed leaves with distinctive purple blotches around the centre, from which small, nodding, purple flowers with yellow centres appear on tall stems, from late spring to early summer.
It's ideal for growing in woodland planting schemes, among ferns or under deciduous trees.
For best results grow Geranium phaeum in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to shade. Cut back plants after flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms.
