Epimediums have been popular in Japan for many years but are now increasing in popularity in Britain. They are generally hardy and thrive in dappled shade in moist, well-drained soil, bring light to a shady broder.

Epimedium x perralchicum is a pretty, but robust barrenwort, forming a large clump of glossy, heart-shaped deep green leaves, which are flushed bronze in spring and autumn. Tiny pendent, bright yellow flowers appear on delicate wiry stems, from mid- to late-spring. Epimedium x perralchicum is ideal for growing beneath deciduous trees, and makes excellent ground cover.

For the best foliage, cut back old leaves in spring before new leaves appear.
