The Madeiran orchid, Dactylorhiza foliosa is an easy-to-grow, rarely available plant native to the Portugese island of Madeira. It bears large spikes of purple flowers with dotted, darker lips. It looks fantastic when planted en masse among grasses or in informal borders.

Dactylorhiza foliosa thrives throughout Britain as far as northern Scotland, and grows best in full sun and damp soil. If happy, plants will form dense clumps after several years and may be divided in autumn. Learn more in our spotted orchid grow guide.
