Although the melons we buy from supermarkets are grown in warmer climes, it's possible to grow your own in a greenhouse. Melons are closely related to cucumbers and require similar growing conditions to thrive – simply provide them with warmth, water and food. Melon plants can be quite vigorous, so regular pruning is needed to keep them under control. Each plant should produce two to four melons.
Cucumis melo 'Sienne F1' is a superb melon, which bears attractive fruits with sweet orange flesh. This variety is available to buy as a plant grafted on to a more vigorous rootstock, increasing your chances of a good crop of fruit. It may also be grown outside in southern regions, but will bear more fruit if offered protection.
Grow Cucumis melo 'Sienne F1 in rich, fertile soil, ideally in a greenhouse, and water well. Tie the plants to their supports as they grow and allow up to four melons to develop per plant.
