Fragrant winter hazel, Corylopsis glabrescens, is a fantastic spreading shrub for year-round interest. In early spring it bears primrose-yellow, sweetly scented, bell-shaped hanging flowers on bare stems, before the leaves appear. Its green summer leaves turn shades of orange and red before falling in autumn.
Grow Corylopsis glabrescens in moist, acidic soil in semi-shade. A sheltered site is preferable, as late frosts may damage the blooms. Prune immediately after flowering.
