Clematis flammula is a large, vigorous deciduous climber with glossy deep green leaves. Masses of small, fragrant star-shaped white flowers appear in late-summer and autumn, followed by fluffy seed heads. A vigorous climber, it's perfect for growing through a tree or shrub in a large garden.

Clematis flammula is also known as the fragrant virgin's bower. This refers to its hawthorn-vanilla perfume that fills the air after rain.

Being a late-flowering clematis, Clematis flammula requires falls into Pruning Group Three. Simply cut stems back to the lowest pair of buds in February or March.
