Flowering rush, Butomus umbellatus, is a handsome marginal plant from Asia. It looks magnificent at the water's edge, especially when grown in large groups. It bears attractive bi-coloured flowers up to 3cm across, gathered in a distinctive umbel on tall stems, above twisted, grassy foliage. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Grow Butomus umbellatus in moist or boggy soil in full sun. Divide clumps regularly for the best display of flowers.
