Bergenias make excellent ground-cover plants. Bergenia 'Ballawley' has extremely large, glossy leaves, which are fresh green throughout summer, and develop red hues with frost. Branching heads of rose-red flowers appear on tall stems in spring.
Although bergenias thrive in light shade, the foliage of coloured leafed varieties like this one is strongest when grown in sun and poor soil. Use as a substitute for hostas in poor soil or drier conditions.
