False goatsbeard, Astilbe, is a perennial with showy plumes of dramatic flowers atop fern-like foliage. It’s perfect for a shady corner, where its dramatic blooms will add height and colour. There are many varieties of astilbe to choose from, bearing flowers ranging in colour from dark pink to cream-white. Their flowers are adored by pollinators, especially hoverflies.

Astilbe 'Montgomery' is a compact variety perfect for small gardens and container displays. It has dramatic scarlet-red plumes, which contrast beautifully with bronze-green, glossy foliage. It makes an excellent cut flower.

Grow Astilbe 'Montgomery' in moist but well-drained soil in partial to full shade (although bear in mind it will flower less reliably in full shade). Avoid afternoon sun as this can scorch the leaves. Water in dry weather and cut back hard after blooming. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn.
