Astelia banksii is an evergreen perennial, forming attractive clumps of silvery green, strap-like leaves. Female plants bear panicles of white flowers in summer, followed by purple-pink fruits in autumn. It’s perfect for adding a tropical feel to the garden, particularly in areas of partial shade.

Grow Astelia banksii in moist but well-drained soil, ideally in partial shade although it will tolerate full sun. As its name suggests, it’s well-suited to growing in coastal areas. You may need to offer protection in winter. Divide congested clumps in spring.
