Blue-flowered alliums are rarely found and are much prized in horticultural circles. Allium cyaneum is a particularly lovely species, growing to just 25cm and bearing open nodding clusters of deep purple-blue, bell-shaped blooms, above bright green, grass-like foliage. Clump-forming, it’s perfect for growing as part of a rockery, gravel garden or container display.
Grow Allium cyaneum in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Don’t let the soil become wet in winter. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn.
