Acer palmatum is a deciduous, woody shrub native to parts of Asia and Russia. There are many garden-worthy cultivars available, which have been bred for their leaf shapes and colours.
Acer palmatum var. dissectum is a small, slow-growing Japanese maple, with delicate, lacy foliage, small purple flowers and fantastic autumn colour.
Acer palmatum var. dissectum 'Baldsmith' is a lovely small tree with orange-red, lacy leaves, which become green as they mature, and eventually turn a rich orange in autumn. For best results, grow ‘Baldsmith’ in sun or partial shade, and protect it from the harshest winds, which may cause leaf scorch.
