Rosa 'New Dawn' is considered to be one of the best repeat-flowering climbing roses you can buy. A medium climber growing to 4.5m, it bears masses of semi-double, soft-pink flowers with a sweet fragrance, which contrast beautifully with glossy, dark green foliage. Its main flowering period is in June, then with regular deadheading and feeding it will continue to flower sporadically until the first frosts.

Being a semi-double rose, New Dawn rose provides pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators, but only as the flowers start to age and reveal their centre.

New Dawn rose is a vigorous grower so will quickly cover a trellis or obelisk. It's fairly resistant to pests and diseases, although may attract the usual aphids and sawfly caterpillars – these are usually not a problem and are best left for natural predators to deal with. It can also be susceptible to rose black spot.

How to grow New Dawn rose

Grow New Dawn rose in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, in full sun to partial shade. Deadhead spent blooms to promote flowering and prune in late winter, taking care not to remove too much new growth as this is where you'll find the flower buds for the following year. A thick mulch of well-rotted manure or home-made compost in autumn will help keep the soil fertile, healthy and moisture-retentive, which is perfect for roses.

As Rose 'New Dawn' is such a vigorous climber, it's best not to grow it in a container. Choose a patio rose for a pot, instead.
