Neon pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Neon') is a handsome and easy to grow foliage plant for the home or conservatory. A cultivated variety of Devil's ivy or golden pothos, 'Neon' has heart-shaped, glossy yellow-green leaves that mature to bright 'neon' green. This adaptable plant is particularly useful for the home, thriving away from direct sunlight, and has versatile climbing or trailing growth.

Bear in mind that neon pothos is toxic and may cause sickness if eaten, so keep it out of reach from dogs and other pets that may nibble foliage. The foliage may cause irritation to skin and eyes – wear gloves when handling and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.

How to grow neon pothos

Grow neon pothos in good bright light but out of direct sunlight, although bear in mind that too much shade could lead to duller leaf colour. Neon pothos tolerates a range of temperatures and is a good choice for a kitchen or bathroom. To grow neon pothos as a climber, train the stems up on a moss pole or on a framework. Or allow the stems to cascade naturally and grow as a trailing plant, including in a hanging pot.

Water regularly to ensure the compost doesn’t dry out completely but don't let the pot sit in water, as this can cause root and stem rot. In a dry atmosphere such as in a living room, stand the pot on a water-filled tray or saucer of gravel to boost humidity around the plant. In spring and summer, feed every two to three weeks with a balanced house plant fertiliser, to boost growth and encourage good leaf colour.

Trim stems as required to keep to the height of its support, and remove unwanted or straggly shoots. Propagate by stem cuttings placed in water until roots appear, then pot up.
