It’s finally that time of year again, and Webb Garden Power’s expert Adam Woolcott knows just how to get the best results
Your lawn is one of the biggest indicators that the long-awaited warmer weather is finally on the horizon. After months of puddles, worm casts and mud, the grass begins to awaken. And though you may not notice much difference at first, as the days grow longer and sunnier, the grass becomes greener and stronger.
That’s when you can take action. Each decision you make can have a bearing on growth and coverage, so if you want your lawn to look neater and lusher than ever this spring and summer, follow Webb Garden Power’s gardening expert Adam Woolcott’s foolproof tips.

Generally, March is a great time to begin cutting your lawn regularly, but you’ll need to be guided by the weather and ground conditions. If it’s still very cold with frosts and lots of moisture underfoot, then wait a while longer until things improve.
In March or April, give your lawn a boost by applying a high-nitrogen fertiliser. This will help replenish essential nutrients lost over the winter months, promoting strong, healthy growth as temperatures rise. It also encourages lush, green blades and supports root development, preparing your grass for the growing season ahead.
Be sure to apply the fertiliser evenly and follow package instructions to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to excessive growth or nutrient imbalances. If possible, apply just before a light rain or water the lawn afterwards, to help the nutrients absorb into the soil effectively.
Does your mower need servicing?

Your lawn will be much happier being cut little and often. Starting with a low cut at the beginning of the season can be detrimental to your grass, causing it to discolour or scorch in the hot sun.
If it’s very tall at the start of the year, set your lawnmower on the highest setting at first and then cut once a week, dropping the height gradually every time until you achieve your desired result. More ornamental lawns suit a shorter cut, but for an area of grass that’s likely to experience a lot of traffic, it’s best to leave it taller.

When buying a lawnmower, consider three key factors: the size of your lawn, the desired finish (e.g. fine cut for ornamental lawns or side discharge for rough grass), and the power source (manual, electric, petrol or battery). For guidance, check out Webb’s lawnmower advice section on the website.

Large lawns particularly lend themselves to being striped, but this can still be achieved on smaller lawns as well – the secret is a mower with a rear roller. You’ll get the best results by cutting up and down from the point you view your lawn, slightly overlapping the cut each time.

Spring is the right to time to deal with thatch, as removing it is often a disruptive process that can leave the lawn looking worse before it improves. But what is scarifying? In essence, it involves metal tines spinning at high speeds to remove all the thatch that’s built up on the surface. It’s a bit like using a stiff hairbrush to untangle and remove the damaged and loose hairs on your scalp!
Scarifying can be carried out manually using a rake on small areas of grass – simply rake vigorously one way, and then do the same perpendicularly. However, for larger lawns I would recommend using a machine. Webb has a wide range of both electric- and petrol-powered machines for any size you need. Handily, they also come with collection boxes for easy disposal.
