As the frosts taper off and nature begins to wake up, our thoughts naturally turn to spending quality time outdoors again. And whether you’re planning a significant overhaul of your garden or just a few new touches, it always helps to have some inspiration.
“Decks, especially, are increasingly being seen as extensions of our homes, and styling them can be just as layered,” says stylist Claire Lawlor. “It’s all about making a practical space for everyday living while keeping it fun. You want it to be a place you can live in, not just visit.”
Outdoor specialist Trex has been reimagining homeowners’ gardens with its stylish, low-maintenance and impressively durable composite decking for more than 30 years. And now, with Claire’s help, the manufacturer is here to bring you some handy pointers on how best to enjoy your deck during the warmer months.
1. Start neutral, then add colour
Neutral furniture is always a sound investment, as it can be easily matched with new accessories over time to change the feel without any major changes.
“Textiles are essential when it comes to creating a cosy, lived-in vibe,” says Claire. “Add some soft cushions and throws to your seating area – and nothing says spring more than a floral print!”
Claire’s other top tip is to always include an outdoor rug to tie everything together, as it’s like “laying down an extra layer of personality” that really makes the space feel like an extension of your living room.
Looking to replace your decking?
If you love the look and texture of traditional timber decking, but are worried about warping, rotting or discolouration, why not consider Trex’s composite decking?
Unlike PVC, which is often made from virgin plastic, this composite decking is created using up to 95% recycled materials, including plastic film and reclaimed sawdust.
Available in a range of shades to match any garden, it’s designed to imitate the natural beauty of wood without all the maintenance hassle. In fact, this high-performance decking can withstand the toughest elements to keep its form and rich colour for decades
2. Add plants
Spring is all about new growth, and that applies to your planters, too. If your space is feeling a little bare, add some fresh flowers, plants, or even herbs for a splash of life and colour.
“The plants you choose should reflect your style – whether you go for a minimalist aesthetic with clean succulents or a lush, wild garden look with cascading vines,” says Claire.
To encourage even more cohesion between your indoor and outdoor spaces, you could also try looking for plants or flowers that complement your house plants.
3. Choose the right lighting
When the sun sets, you’ll want your garden to have that magical glow. Festoon lights are an obvious favourite, but consider adding lanterns, fairy lights, or even solar-powered garden stakes for extra ambiance.
“Choose warm-toned lights to create a soft, inviting glow,” suggests Claire. “And don’t forget about candles – there’s nothing like the flicker of a candle to bring warmth to your outdoor space.”
