How to make a Christmas table centrepiece

Plus, when you pick up your Christmas tree, you can also ask for offcuts of spruce – they’ll often be free. Long lengths of English ivy are fantastic for decorating with.

Follow these steps to find out how to make your own Christmas table centrepiece.

You Will Need

• Foliage with berries
• Velvet ribbon
• White napkins
• White hellebores
• White kalanchoe
• Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus)
• Asparagus Fern (Asparagus setaceus)
• Sphagnum moss (ethically sourced)
• Container with no drainage holes
• Candles and holders
• Ornaments
• Lengths of ivy
• Blue spruce branches or noble fir
• Brass wreath ring
• Compost
• Low VOC gold spray paint

Step 1

Using a spray paint that has low levels of VOCs (as this is better for the environment) spray gold paint onto sprigs of ivy with berries (do it somewhere well ventilated). Leave to dry overnight.

Step 2

Attach ribbon round folded napkins, securing with tape at the back. Place the sprayed ivy as shown.

Step 3

To make the centrepiece, we planted hellebores and kalanchoe in a bronze trough, added a moss mulch, then pushed cut pieces of asparagus fern and butcher’s broom into the compost in the container. The display lasts for two/three weeks if kept moist.

Finishing touches

• Add cuttings of ivy and other greenery to your table for a rustic yet elegant look
